'Watchful Fox'

An Art Nouveau period Original Modelled by Paul Walther, c.1910

On offer here then is this quite delightful study in watchfulness and patience,  an Art Nouveau period original sculpture by Paul Walther.

Imagine if you will this fox as Narcissus, enchanted by his own image reflected in the pool? Then again his intense stare may be at a mouse hole ready to pounce, or is the mouse just teasing him.

Whatever, it is a pleasing interplay of desire and protectiveness that is unleashed
when a sculpted animal is placed on a dish like this.  Were one say, to place a treasured gem, business card or some other trinket in front of him, the juxtaposition of this and the fox's beady stare makes for an interesting study indeed.
